[ Niger-Congo » Kwa ]
Kwa languages
There are some 40-60 Kwa languages spoken in West Africa. For present purposes they can be divided into groupings as follows (cfr Stewart 1989, Williamson & Blench 2000):
- Potou-Tano languages, incl. Akan, Baule, Anyi
- Na-Togo languages, incl. Lelemi-Lefana, Adele
- Left Bank Kwa languages, incl. Gbe (Ewe)
- remnant Kwa languages, incl. Ga-Dangme, Attie, Abbey
Note that a number of languages that used to be classified as Kwa languages, e.g. Yoruba and Igbo, are here (as in most contemporary classifications) classified as Benue-Congo languages.
