Invited Talk: Do we need linguistic knowledge for speech technology applications in African languages?

English ↔ Luo Machine Translation

This is a rudimentary machine translation system for the language pair English - Luo (Dholuo). Its backbone is the MOSES statistical machine translation package. The system was trained on the Luo version of the New Testament. While it is therefore relatively capable of translating religious material, it is not very well suited for other registers.

From English to Luo
(e.g. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the son of God.)
From Luo to English
(e.g. En ng'a moloyo piny? Mana jalo moyie ni Yesu en wuod Nyasaye.)

A detailed description of this system can be found in the paper "A Knowledge-Light Approach to Luo Machine Translation and Part-of-Speech Tagging" by Guy De Pauw, Naomi Maajabu and Peter Waiganjo Wagacha.
